Bader Martin Adopts a Compressed Summer Workweek

Seattle, WA—May 14, 2008—Bader Martin, PS becomes one of the only public accounting firms in the region to implement a compressed, four-day workweek for the summer months. Bader Martin's staff will follow the alternative work schedule from mid-May through mid-August, working longer hours Monday through Thursday and generally taking Fridays off.

According to Bader Martin’s managing shareholder, Walter Smith, CPA, “There are obvious benefits for our staff and the local community from a compressed workweek: reduced gas consumption, less traffic congestion, and correspondingly less pollution―some studies even cite employee health benefits. Equally important for our professionals, coming as it does after an extremely busy first quarter, is the flexibility that a four-day workweek offers in balancing personal and work commitments.”

“Flexibility and work/life balance are important considerations for our staff, both in selecting Bader Martin as an employer and in their continued satisfaction with the firm,” said Natalie Novak, PHR, Bader Martin’s human resources manager. “As a result, we take them very seriously.”

In support, Novak notes that Bader Martin is a semi-finalist for the 2008 Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility, recognizing employers that successfully use workplace flexibility to meet organizational and employee goals.

To ensure that the firm’s commitment to clients and professional colleagues remains a top priority under the new schedule, all members of the professional staff will closely monitor voicemail and email each Friday throughout the summer, and will continue to be available on Fridays for scheduled meetings and time-sensitive projects.

Although the new schedule means that the Bader Martin office is technically closed on Fridays during the summer, the four-day workweek is optional, providing staff with additional flexibility. Those with daycare schedules or other arrangements that do not readily accommodate a four-day workweek can continue on a five-day work schedule.

“The compressed workweek option is simply one more way to provide our staff with the flexibility that helps them blend the work they love with their lives outside of Bader Martin,” according to Novak. The firm’s HR policies also support flex-time hours, part-time schedules, and occasional work-from-home arrangements, among others.
