Managing Principal, Walt Smith
Bader Martin's Managing Shareholder, Walt Smith, is a CPA and a member of the firm's tax practice. He's also an avid windsurfer.
Walt provides a blend of tax, financial, and business consulting services for privately held businesses and their owners. He is also the firm's director of Real Estate Services and is a recognized expert in commercial and residential real estate, and partnership syndication. He has extensive experience in tax and financial reporting for real estate developers, investors, owners, lessors and managers.
Walt developed an alternative, historic-preservation redevelopment plan for a troubled (cash-flow negative) property that its owners were prepared to abandon at a significant financial loss. The new plan created a mixed-use implementation in a high-density development. It generated major historic-preservation tax credits that were sold to a new investor, and resulted in a positive cash flow. He also assists a large Seattle real estate developer/manager with a strategic debt restructuring plan to maximize benefits from a changing economic climate over time.
Many of Walt's clients are new or emerging businesses, or companies struggling with financial or operational challenges. He advised the founder of a local biotech firm from the company's inception through its initial public offering—including guidance on its operating structure, capitalization, lease arrangements, and CFO recruitment. He also provided the founder with personal tax and financial planning services.
When a small family-owned manufacturing company found itself unable to meet its credit obligations, Walt assisted in its financial turnaround. He created and helped to implement a new budgeting process and assisted in securing additional investments and an expanded bank line of credit. The company is now cash-flow positive, has reduced its debt by 50%, and has repaid its investors.
Walt serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees for the University of Washington Accounting Development Fund and is both Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors for the Glaser Foundation. His professional affiliations include the American Institute of CPAs, the Washington Society of CPAs, Seattle CPA Tax Roundtable and the Rotary Club of Seattle.
Walt graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from the University of Washington.
